詩人ニール・ホール氏との交流について

　津田塾大学言語文化研究所では、2025年10月6日〜27日にかけて、アフリカ系アメリカ人の詩人ニール・ホール氏を招聘し、英語英文学科の複数の講義およびセミナーを実施しました。また、アメリカ文学女性像研究会における詩の朗読会を開催したほか、第66回津田塾祭において、アメリカ文化研究会とジャズカフェ h.imagine の共催で公開朗読会を行いました。

　ホール氏は国際的に高く評価される詩人であり、アメリカ国内のみならず、ギリシャやインドなど諸外国でも数々の文学賞を受賞しています。その作品は日本語を含む多言語に翻訳され、世界各地の読者を魅了しています。

　朗読会では、アフリカ系の人々が経験してきた差別や抑圧、その痛みと尊厳を描き出すホール氏の力強い言葉が、聴衆に深い共感と感銘を与えました。また、歓迎会および送別会を通じ、学術的交流にとどまらない心温まる交流が育まれました。

　当学科では、今後も世界とつながる学びの機会を学生に提供してまいります。

I used to think that poetry was abstract and difficult. Even when I read poems in Japanese, I often felt nervous and found them hard to approach. Since I’m not good at English, I was also worried about whether I could understand their meaning. However, the poem was very sharp and easy to understand, and above all, it was spoken with honest and straightforward words that carried a strong passion. Because the words were so direct, I could also feel the cruelty and harsh reality contained within them.

It was my first time listening to an English poem, so I was very impressed. Among them, I was surprised that the way of adding strength, rhythm, and accent to the words was completely different from what I had imagined. Since it was a recitation by the author, I felt that the message was even stronger.
